Why most Chinese placement tests get it wrong
If you've ever signed your child up for a Chinese course, you know the drill: a multiple-choice grammar quiz, maybe a short chat with a salesperson, and then — surprise — the level that "fits" is the one with seats available.
Grammar quizzes measure what a child knows about Chinese. They don't measure what a child can do with it. A heritage kid who understands everything at home but freezes when speaking will ace the quiz and drown in the class. A beginner who's fearless about talking will bomb the quiz and be bored within a week.
Speaking is the skill that matters first. So that's what we test.
What our placement interview actually is
LUMI's placement interview is a 15-minute spoken conversation with an AI tutor — not a form, not a quiz, and (this matters) not a sales call.

What the levels mean
Our six levels cover ages 4–16, from first words to exam-track fluency:

The report tells you not just a level, but why — which structures your child used confidently, where they switched to single words, and what the first four lessons will focus on.
Three questions parents ask us
"Is an AI interview as good as a human teacher's judgment?" For placement, it's arguably more consistent. The AI asks the same calibrated sequence every time and doesn't get charmed by a talkative kid or rushed by a schedule.
